Advent is a time to reflect on our lives, to let go of what doesn't matter, and to focus on what does.
Our world tells us that control of your life is what matters. More money, more success, more right politics are the answer. But none of these can save you from death. And in the face of death we plunge into creature comforts and faux control.
But Jesus points out that what matters the most, more than politics, more than the right ideologies, more than creature comforts, is hope.
And the only real hope in this world is found in Jesus. He suffered our death, and ressurected to new life. And if we trust him, our suffering is not meaningless, and death is not the end. And that's the only hope that matters.
