Use Words Only When Necessary

Use Words Only When Necessary

Pastoral Note from Rev. Seth Enriquez

'Preach the gospel at all times. And if necessary, use words.'  This is probably the most quoted monastic saying in the modern Anglican church. I’ve heard it in countless homilies. It’s been offered as sage advice by well-meaning Christians eager to give advice on how to live out our faith.

Basically, it’s a trusty arrow in our quiver of Christian conventional wisdom on sharing our faith, encapsulated in that dreaded word: evangelism (spooky.jpg). At its heart this little saying is meant to remind parts of the Christian family that there is a risk of over-emphasizing proselytizing at the expense of living out the heart of Jesus in deeds of love.

This almost biblical quote is attributed to St Francis of Assisi, often depicted as a humble friar surrounded by little animals.

But did St Francis say this? ...

New song this Sunday!

New song this Sunday!

"Christ Be In My Heart"

Singing with friends is a lot of fun, and church is one of the few places we get to do that. But when we sing, we're more than a choir.

When we sing, we are worshipping God. And worship is an invitation to God to reshape our hearts and minds to love as God loves. The words we sing matter, because they give shape to the desire of our hearts to be more like Jesus.

"Christ Be In My Heart" is a wonderful new song by Sam McCabe & Kristene DiMarco that uses ancient words in a fresh new expression to worship God and invite Jesus Christ to be the shape of our love for those around us.

WHAT WE'RE READING, LISTENING TO, AND WATCHING

Edifying content that has deeply informed our work this season

- Christian Human Rights is an excellent book by Samuel Moyn, professor of law and history at Yale University, that traces the origin of modern human rights anchored in the dignity of human beings born from Christian theology and faith.

- Beware the god of Open Options is a thoughtful reflection on the nature of comittment in an honest faith.

 - Difference: Be Prestent is a short but meaninful video by Archbishop Justin Welby on the spiritual practice of being present.

- Testimony of a Changed Heart is an encouraging window into the faith journey of a skeptic turn Christian.

From Your Mind to Your Heart

From Your Mind to Your Heart

Sunday, August 6, 2023

In 'From Your Mind to Your Heart' Rev. Seth reminds us that agreeing with Jesus isn't the same as following him. Mere assent isn't the same as a living trust. A genuine faith is a life lived for Jesus, and only this life brings healing and wholeness to our world and our lives.

Bible Study

Bible Study

Every Wednesday at 7:30pm

The Bible is God's written word, given to us by the Holy Spirit as a revelation of God's acts in history and our final authority in matters of faith and practice.

So we're making time this summer to meet weekly to read the bible, explore and share on our weekly passage, and to grow in faith and friendship.

If you'd like to grow in faith, hope, and love, join us every Wednesday at 7:30pm at The Rectory (406 Buffalo St) with Seth & Brit as they host our summer bible study!
